Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphometric characteristics of Korean vertebrae, which gives basic data to anthropometry and contributes to treatment related with vertebral diseases.
A total of 300 vertebrae were measured from lower throacic(T 11, 12), lumbar(L 1-5) and sacrum. Direct dimensional measurements were obtained from dried adult vertebrae using caliper and goniometer. The parameters considered were the size of the
vertebrae, the vertebral body, the width of the pedicle isthmus in the transverse and sagittal plans, pedicle angles in the transverse plane than along a line parallel to the mid-line of the vertebral body.
Horizontal diameters of the vertebral canal slightly increase caudally, whereas the anteroposterior diameters of the vertebral canal exhibits little or no differences. Pedicles were widest at sacrum (24.2¡¾1.7mm) and narrowest at
L1-2(7.5¡¾1.3mm).
Due
to the oval shape of the pedicle, the sagittal plane width was generally larger than the transverse plane width.
The largest pedicle angle in the transverse plane was at sacrum(42*). The pedicle axis to substantial level is almost always directed anteromedially and gradually increases caudally, the value of which was 1¡Æ at T11, 28¡Æ at L5 and 42¡Æ at
sacrum.
